Timeless Wisdom

Hippocrates was a Greek physician who lived between the years of 460 BC- 370 BC. He made many contributions to medicine with his findings, and his teachings are timeless. He believed in the importance of a good diet, cleanliness and hygiene, fresh air and rest. These are his answers to many of problems his patients faced back in his time, but we’ve come to realise that these are the answers to many of our health related problems too! We’ve gathered some of his best teachings to help you keep it together as the most stressful season approaches.

Walking is man's best medicine.

Convenience is our best friend and our worst enemy. Being able to drive, take a bus or an Uber, many of us stopped taking a walk for the sake of just being outside. Taking a short walk every day has been proven to help improve your mood, maintain your weight, and prevent diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 Diabetes. A short walk is the least extensive of all exercises, but its benefits are hard to ignore.

Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.

Now, we know we go on and on and on…about the importance of a good diet, but it is not new advice! Hippocrates has stressed the importance of a good diet since his time, and this advice is practically everywhere, in every magazine or newspaper you can lay your hand on. However, many of us still do not implement a good diet into our lifestyles. We rely on addictive substances such as caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes and a sedentary lifestyle to get through our day and relax, however we are to pay the price in due time. These unhealthy habits force us to turn to medicine, however Hippocrates believed in a good diet being the answer to avoiding illness, and if illness should befall someone, then a good diet will be their cure. Eating a balanced diet, full of the nutrients and vitamins your body needs allows your body to function at its best, at all times.

Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.

Hippocrates believed in a number of things when his patients came to him ill. He would recommend good hygiene, a good diet and plenty of rest. With his very ill patients, he would make it vital that they do nothing but rest, as he was aware of the fact that the body knows how to take care of itself. In wellness and illness, your body is guiding you through what it needs. When your muscles ache, or you feel a migraine coming on, it’s your body telling you to slow down and relax. We are not machines! Listen to your body and it will always help you take care of you.

Everything in excess is opposed to nature.

The balance of life is difficult to get right. It is far too easy to get wrapped in our everyday problems with work, relationships and family, and allow yourself to slip and take less care of yourself. Yes, it is fine to commit yourself to your work; there is no better feeling than that of accomplishment. It’s also fine to hang out with the girls, have a glass of wine and laugh your troubles away with a bar of chocolate. But, it is crucial to find the balance in balancing yourself. Balancing your time, your engagement with your day-to-day activities, and the variety you incorporate into your diet and your exercise regimes. As humans, we have an incredible ability to become bored very quickly. Being able to balance responsibilities, fun and pleasure allows for you to get the most out of life. Try it out this week!
