MUSIC TO GET YOU THROUGH

MUSIC TO GET YOU THROUGH

LIFE IS ONE GRAND, SWEET SONG,

SO START THE MUSIC

It’s hard to believe than an arrangement of sounds can help cheer you up or provoke a running stream of tears depending on the mood you are in. Music is powerful, and we hardly ever seem to give it credit, or utilise it to its advantage. Aristotle hit the nail on the head when he noticed the influence music can have, and on the importance of sharing it with the young:

Music has the power of producing a certain effect on moral character of the soul, and if it has the power to do this, it is clear that the young must be directed to music and must be educated in it. - Aristotle

Music can directly impact how we feel, and in turn influence our thoughts, emotions and even character to a certain extent. It can change us in big ways, but even change how we feel momentarily. If we were to listen to the smooth jazz of the 30’s and 40’s whilst on a busy train, it would allow the listener to feel at ease, and to relax as the tones of the instruments used allow your mind to travel to a different space. The power of music is its ability to take you somewhere. The best artists have harnessed this and allowed their music to speak into existence the depth and complexity of their emotions as the rhythm and overall composition of the song delivers an entirely different experience rather than merely speaking the lyrics. The sound of the music fills in the gaps of emotion where words may fall short, and it is in this method of working that music can be so beautiful and enjoyable.

As well as a form of escape, music can be used to bring to light bigger social and political issues of the time. It is one of the reasons why the Beatles will always be seen as some of the greats of music, using their power in entertainment not only for enjoyment, but to also comment on the issues of the 60’s and 70’s. With songs like “Hey Jude”, they took the world by storm by not only delivering a catchy song, but a song that brought out the fighting spirit in the public when many were fighting against issues such as gender equality, gay rights, the civil rights movement, youth culture, environmental causes and more. It cheered people on to keep fighting and pushing for change.

It had been British artists that took over the music scene and created innovative sounds that would go on to stand the test of time. The UK was responsible for giving the world musical greats such as David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Elton John, Queen, George Michael and many more. These British Artists have gone on to become legends as although they all come from different genres, they have all created music that the whole world can identify with and enjoy, and it is for this reason music is incredibly popular. Music is to be enjoyed, and when it can do more than simply elevate your mood, it will surely go on to being remembered.

We love great music as it helps us to feel better or better understand our emotions. We regularly enjoy listening to Spotify playlists as they seem to have playlists to suit each and every mood. We have made it our mission to help compile a list of the best playlists you can listen to over the next week. Enjoy!
